I believe that they are there to help improve front end aerodynamics

Yes, engineered to break up the air airdam up front for aerodynamics. Nothing to do with breaks, more about Mileage efficiency.

I'm going with a yes. Anything that allows for more air flow around, over, or through (kind of) has got to help add to the mpg of the car.
