Front Skid Plate Option

I’m really enjoying this forum—thanks again for having me. I am setting up an order for my Telluride SXP AWD w/Towing and have added a Front Skid Plate for beach trips and for driving on our many unpaved roads. Today however, I noticed ‘Front and Rear Skid Plate’ under ‘Standard Features and Specs’. Is the optional skid plate a separate more robust piece, or am I wasting $350 (MSRP) by adding it as an option?

The standard "skid pads" are cosmetic. Although no one has seen the $350 skid plates installed, it is suppose to be an actual skid plate.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I will have to dig a little deeper to get clarity on this. On one site I saw the front skid plate listed under “late availability”.
