Great news everyone, Kia just issued a Customer Satisfaction Initiative for the windshield issue.
=========================================================================

Dear Kia Telluride Owner:

Congratulations on the purchase of your new 2020MY Kia Telluride! We packed the Telluride with all the things you need for life's adventures-powerful performance, exceptional handling, and signature Kia technology-so you can get everything you want out of it and then some.

We're writing to let you know that as part of our ongoing monitoring of Telluride Performance, we have identified that in some instances, customers have reported windshield chipping followed by extensive cracking within a short period of time, thereby preventing repair of the chip.

Your vehicle's 2020 warranty specifically excludes coverage for broken, chipped, scratched or damaged window glass due to outside influence. However, as you are a valued customer, Kia would like to provide you with repair support should you encounter the issue described above.

What Will Kia Do?
  • In an effort to ensure customer satisfaction, Kia will replace your Telluride's windshield as a goodwill gesture should it chip and crack thereby preventing repair of the chip while we continue to investigate this issue.
    • Please note that damage caused to your windshield due to a vehicle collision will not be covered under this initiative.
  • Kia will provide you with alternate transportation for the duration of the windshield repair, if necessary.
  • If you have encountered any out-of-pocket expense associated with your issue previously, you may be eligible for reimbursement of that repair upon receipt of back-up documentation/receipts for thosr expenses.
What Should You Do?
  • Should you experience the above described condition and your windshield needs replacement because it is not repairable, please contact your local authorized Kia dealer and schedule an appointment. Bring this letter to the appointement and provide it to the dealer for reference.
  • To find your nearest dealer, visit www.kia.com and click the Find Dealer button in the upper right corner.

I wonder if this is a manufacturing or design issue they are addressing for future Tellurides. If they are agreeing to fix it it must serious.

It's the roof pillars, door frames and roof that determines structural Integrity - glass is disposable in the context of a roll over...

Attached for anyone interested is a clean copy of the windshield letter if you want to download - not included is the request for reimbursement form that was in the envelope. I got my letter yesterday - purchased vehicle on 9/27, so pretty sure all will get it eventually.

Those who have experienced the issue should go to the NHTSA site (https://www.nhtsa.gov/vehicle/2020/KIA/TELLURIDE/SUV) and report it - there were 50 such reports there as of yesterday... one of the reports indicated they had the factory windshield replaced only to have the same chip & crack issue happen to the replacement.

It's gotta be an issue with the way the glass was made, which hopefully they figure out and offer the improved replacement to all.

OH i beg to differ Quote :
What role does my windshield play to ensure my safety in an accident?
The windshield provides a significant amount of strength to the structural support in the cabin of the vehicle. For instance, in a front end collision the windshield provides up to 45% of the structural integrity of the cabin of the vehicle and in a rollover, up to 60%.
Think about that for just a moment. How would you like perfect watches for over half of the force of a collision to be absorbed by YOU because your windshield flew out in an accident? It happens more times than most of us are aware.
The windshield is an integral part of the safety restraint system in your car. It keeps the roof from crushing in on you in a rollover, it allows the airbags to deploy in the correct position to cushion passengers, and prevents you and your family from being ejected in a serious collision. It’s important to your family’s safety that the automotive glass in your vehicle be installed properly. Source https://www.safewindshields.org/wha...ield-play-to-ensure-my-safety-in-an-accident/

Damn Right it is structural... Here is another website https://drivinglife.net/windshield-protect-structure-vehicle/

Support During An Accident
Windshields provide the necessary strength and rigidity to secure the structure of the car in case of an accident.

  • Collisions: When your car collides with something head-on, the windshield will contribute about 45% of the vehicle’s structural integrity. Without the windshield, the car could be completely crushed from the force of impact.
  • Air Bag Support: Most know that air bags will deploy in an accident to keep passengers safe. However, most do not know that the windshield is what actually allows for an air bag to function properly. The strength of a windshield supports the force and speed of a deployed air bag allowingthe bag to first bounce off it and then towards the passenger. The windshield absorbs the impact of the airbags preventing injury to those in the vehicle.
  • Rollovers: In rollover situations, the windshield plays a key role in upholding the structure of the car and preventing the roof from collapsing. Given that some of the biggest injuries suffered by passengers in rollover accidents are due to ejections and head injuries, having a strong windshield to prevent more serious and traumatic injuries.

Hmmm This glass is very thin if you ask me... i'll have to measure the other two american cars i have vs the T-Ride but just looking at it, it looks like it would take much to crack these windows

This is still a big issue. My windshield cracked on 3/23/21 something small I was calling around to get prices. After an hour the crack grew 7 inches and by the end of the day it was half way through. I called the dealership and they said that I "might" be able to have this covered. If anyone can give me solid info. when I take it in it would be greatly appreciated.

Toyavh777,
Interesting! 3/22/2021 I took a rock on the 405 and when I got home I had a crack exactly like your as I can see by your picture. Rock hit edge of glass at the driver side post and crack is same wave form and extends to about half the info screen. Just had the windshield replaced today. Insurance covered but Kia said nothing about issue extending to 21's. 2021 EX bought in Nov 2020.

Is this covered in Canada as well or is this strictly for American owners?

Post #12 in this thread has all the info available. Note that it was posted on the US Highway Transportation Safety Administration site...

Does Canada have a similar institution?

Print the info and take to a dealer?

With that said, letter says from Kia North America to all MY2020 Telluride owners and doesn't specify country...

FWIW

I’m curious too, located in norther Ontario, I bought my 2021 Kia telluride in November 2020, I got the sx. Edition. And since February I now have 5 chips in my windshield and it’s very pitted. 🤬 I called the dealer to have a look at it and they said if they are from stones then that’s the price you pay for driving it on the road, completely disregarding my point to have it looked at now that it’s a safety issue. No windshield should crack like that. Please let me know if Canada has the same thing.
