GAP was included in my lease. Personally, I would recommend GAP to anyone buying/leasing a vehicle unless you're putting a lot down and your LTV (loan-to-value) ratio is very low. Problem is, dealers usually charge a lot for it. I work for a small credit union and we only charge $375. Well worth it, to me.

In the event of a total loss, your insurance company will pay out what they determine the value of the vehicle to be. If you owe more than that, there is a "gap", that you are responsible for. This is where GAP insurance comes in.

Most insurance companies offer gap insurance and is usually cheaper than the dealer will be.
