Simplest 7-Pin Trailer Connector Conversion

Hey guys,
So, after a bit of reading, I think I may have found the simplest way to convert our 4-pin connector to a 7-pin, and tow trailers with automatic brakes.

You’ll need this for the actual conversion:

Then this as you’re wireless brake controller:

With the combination above, all you really need to do is to run a wire to your battery. 1 wire. That’s it. I’ve seen the YouTube tutorial in which they’ve used a brake controller inside the cabin and a few wires were routed to the battery, back to the cabin, and all the way back to the hitch. Not to mention that this may not even void the warranty (since you didn’t really splice on any of the existing harnesses, like the pedal switch), but don’t quote me on that.

Thoughts?

This is basically how the 7 pin plug that came with my trailer hitch is wired. You will need the tow hitch harness listed below so you don't have to splice any of the wires. The wiring hitch harness also appears to protect the KT electrical system (according to the second link below).


Options for the hitch wiring harness. I got the KIA OEM harness.

Oh, right. I was basically referring to any KT’s that already has the towing package (with the 4 flat connector already in place).

With the 2021 going 7pin, maybe Kia will offer a plug and play harness for the 2020.

I sure do hope that’s the case.
I don't think that'll be possible since you will still have to run at least two wires from the front of the KT to the back. There are no existing wires in the 2020 model. You'll need to run +12VDC from the battery and another wire from the brake controller (unless you used the wireless variety).
